Self-Hired Respite
Self-hired Respite (SHR) provides families with the flexibility to recruit and hire their own respite worker, ensuring that the care provided meets their specific needs and preferences. This service is ideal for families who want to maintain control over the selection and management of their respite care, while still complying with all relevant legal guidelines.
By providing caregivers with the chance to take breaks, Elmy’s intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) respite services enable them to rest, enjoy leisure activities, or attend to personal tasks. During these periods, skilled professionals care for the youth either at home or in another safe environment.
Personalized Care with Your Chosen Caregiver
At Elmy's Special Services, we value the unique needs of every family, offering the flexibility to choose your own caregiver. Self-Hired Respite empowers families to recruit and hire their own respite worker, offering a personalized approach to care.
Flexible Usage
Families can utilize up to 60 hours of Self-hired Respite services within a 90-day period.
This flexibility allows families to use the service as needed, providing support when it is most required.
Choose Your Worker
Families have the freedom to select a respite worker who meets the following criteria:
- The worker must be over 18 years old.
- The worker cannot be a member of the household.
This allows families to choose someone they trust and feel comfortable with, ensuring high-quality care for their loved ones.
Compliance with Legal Guidelines
Families must ensure that their respite worker complies with all Federal and New Jersey requirements:
- The worker must have a Tax Identification Number (TIN) or an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN).
- The worker is responsible for reporting all earned income and paying applicable taxes in a timely manner.
Direct Payment and Reimbursement
Families are responsible for paying their respite worker directly. To facilitate reimbursement:
- Maintain detailed records of the respite service hours provided.
- Keep copies of the respite worker’s progress notes and daily log.
- Submit the necessary paperwork to the provider agency on a monthly basis.
This ensures that all transactions are transparent and comply with legal requirements.
Training and Support
Agency providers are expected to offer training to ensure that family-selected respite workers are knowledgeable and have access to the agency’s expertise. This training helps maintain the quality and effectiveness of the respite care provided.
